Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982, Heckerling directed an update of
Jane Austen'
s 1816 novel
Emma, titled
Clueless in 1995. The film told the story of
Cher Horowitz, a good-natured valley girl-type (she actually lived in Beverly Hills and was quite out of her element in a sequence that took place in the valley). Many considered the film a "turn of the century" rarity for its new fashion innovation of plaid, knee-high socks, and pastel colors; and also for its up and coming technology showcasing the wide use of cellular phones and pagers, which in 1995, were mostly used by the rich and not the common folk.
