On this day in 1886, Pharmacist John Styth Pemberton invented a carbonated beverage in his laboratory as a nonalcoholic alternative to his French Wine Coca, in the event that the pending national temperance movement might prohibit the sale of the alcohol. The formula he created would later be named "Coca-Cola". Today we have a live version of the John Prine classic Hello In There performed by MICHAEL STIPE and BILLY BRAGG.

MP3 of the Day

Director Amy Heckerling was born on this day in 1954. In addition to directing Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982, Heckerling directed an update of Jane Austen's 1816 novel Emma, titled Clueless in 1995. The film told the story of Cher Horowitz, a good-natured valley girl-type (she actually lived in Beverly Hills and was quite out of her element in a sequence that took place in the valley). Many considered the film a "turn of the century" rarity for its new fashion innovation of plaid, knee-high socks, and pastel colors; and also for its up and coming technology showcasing the wide use of cellular phones and pagers, which in 1995, were mostly used by the rich and not the common folk. Today we have Hello Hello Hi by FROM BUBBLEGUM TO SKY. You can catch From Bubblegum to Sky playing a couple shows with Tullycraft in June (in NYC and Washington, DC).

MP3 of the Day

The Northern Exposure episode "Spring Break" first aired on this day in 1991. Things got a little crazy as the town waited for the annual ice breakup and the annual "running of the bulls" down the streets of Cicely. Joel and Maggie found themselves irresistibly drawn together, while Maurice was attracted to a dominating state trooper. Today we have a cover of the Rod Stewart classic Young Turks by SEXTON BLAKE.

THE CLASH played a club called Eric's in Liverpool on this day in 1977. In the crowd, Pete Wylie met a fella named Julian Cope dancing in front of him. They found that they had common interests in music and Pete introduced Julian to another friend of his, Ian McCulloch. The three decided to start their own band. This was the very moment that became the genesis for the bands Echo & The Bunnymen and The Teardrop Explodes. Today we have Formed A Band by ART BRUT.
